Series Continued

With the recent news, it has been extremely hard to focus and remain collected. The media is throwing a stream of negativity but while it may be scary it is also an important time in our society. My emotions and thoughts are fragile but also strong. During times like these, it is important to express yourself. That’s why I have chosen to express my feelings in these paintings.

Over the course of the semester, I have been creating a series of abstract watercolor paintings. Recently, I have switched from the medium of watercolor to gouache. While watercolor gives a light, opaque wash, gouache gives a bold yet moldable color wash. I decided to switch to gouache because the color saturation is much better than watercolor. The entire theme of the series to study the colors with your eyes, as the viewer. So that is why I feel like gouache is more effective. At the beginning of the series I painted on mixed media paper, I have now switched to cold-press watercolor paper. The flow of the paint on this paper is much more lovely and controllable. I have also switched to painting on a flat table rather than painting on an easel. I am able to control the motion of color much better this way. The color stays in one place unless I choose to move it.

With these couple of changes, my series has developed in a more sophisticated set of paintings. There is more variation in the tones and hues. So far, I have finished about five paintings. The colors that I have completed are blue, purple, red, orange, and yellow. I have just one color left to do, which is green. Although I only have the one color left, I will still continue to paint and experiment with the same colors. At the end of the semester, I will choose the ones that I wish to include and frame.
